OK then..here goes..Sorry if you know most of this already....
My good old nugget, the cams,
They are driven by a toothed belt, This has a service interval of around 4years..Has it been checked / changed recently.??
This belt drives ONE of the cams, the other is driven from a chain situated midway along the length of the cams. Its this chain that over time stretches + can cause wear on the toothed sprockets upon which it drives. It was NEVER a Porsche service item, + therefore doesnt get looked at...
If the car in question has been to an Indie recently, then they "should" know about this...
Make SURE the cams + chain, have been either checked OR replaced, [by a GOOD indie that does know what they are doing],,especially if the car has covered over 70K miles..Otherwise you WILL get a bill for £1500-£2000K for new bits...
Ive seen this SO,SO,SO, many times recently , even after the people were warned about this...
Sorry to "bang" on about this, its just it seems to catch a lot of people out...
The clutches seem to last around 70-100K miles.
Also check the balance shaft belts aswell as the cam belt, have been replaced recently..
Oil seals around the front of the engine sometimes leak, but they are a service item at the same time as belts...
Water pumps around 70-100K miles ,
Brake caliper plate lift is an issue , + cant realy be checked for on the test drive, the only way to check is removing the wheels ,calipers etc + its not something that is usualy done at time of purchase..So check in the recent history for records of this being done, if not then budget for this ...A "cheap dodge" is to file / grind down the sides of the pads to make them fit, but this is only a temporary fix...
Gearboxes can wine a bit, but usualy the pinion bearings will have been changed by now..
A stiff gear lever can be the linkage at the gearbox end getting "dry" a good spray with spray grease usualy sorts this out...
Steering clunks under lock to lock are usualy the steering shaft wearing its uj,s out. around £100 fix.
Suspension [struts + shocks],will most probably be at the end of its "usefull life" by now. Unless recent replacement...
Sorry if i have just "told you how to suck eggs" but its always good to be armed with as much info as poss....
The list can go on, if ive missed anything out, then all you other 968 "bods" chime in + fill in the gaps....
Happy searching / buying.....
