Speedsters in actie bij SCCA Races

Zoals wellicht bekend is, heb ik Black Betty de 'looks' gegeven van een SCCA-racer.

Als je je wat meer verdiept in dat racen in de USA, komen er interessante dingen aan het licht:

Club racing

The club racing program is the road racing division where drivers race on either dedicated race tracks or on temporary street circuits. Competitors require either a regional or a national racing license. Both modified production cars (ranging from lightly modified cars with only extra safety equipment to heavily modified cars that retain only the basic shape of the original vehicle) and designed-from-scratch "formula" and "sports racer" cars can be used in club racing. Most of the participants in the Club Racing program are unpaid amateurs, but some go on to professional racing careers. The club is also the source for race workers in all specialties.

The annual national championship for Club Racing is called the SCCA National Championship Runoffs and has been held at Riverside International Raceway (1964, 1966, 1968), Daytona International Speedway (1965, 1967, 1969), Road Atlanta (1970–1993), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (1994–2005), and Heartland Park Topeka (2006–2008). Since 2009, the Runoffs are held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for a minimum of three years.

Since the fifties until today Porsches 356 take part in these club races with great success. The 356s that take part vary from lightly modified cars to heavily modified ones that have only the basic shape of the original. They may be fitted with a tubular frame (only carrying a Speedster VIN), or may even be build on a time correct VW chassis. Furthermore they are often fitted with lighter bodyparts made from aluminium or glass fiber (only time correct material is allowed and therefore for example Kevlar or Carbon fiber for bodyparts are not allowed). The engines also have to be time correct.

Dat betekent dus dat ik geen Porsche 356A Speedster Replica heb gebouwd, maar een heuse originele Porsche 356 Speedster SCCA racer

Time correct VW chassis .... ga ja daar naar op zoek?

Oeps... Ja, daar zeg je zowat...

Een chassis van 1967 is niet 'time correct'

Dus ik heb tóch een replica gebouwd van een Porsche 356A Speedster SCCA Racer...

En even wat verder doordenkend: mijn motor is natuurlijk ook niet 'time correct'...

Jammer... Kan ik dus niet deelnemen aan SCCA races

Je vergeet voor het gemak dan nog even je internationale racelicentie en het SCCA lidmaatschap, waarvoor je dan weer woonachtig moet zijn in Amerika .....

Vrij rijden bij de Harc kan natuurlijk wel gewoon. Ook leuk!

This Speedster was produced in metal but was re-skinned in fiberglass. It has a fiberglass front and back end and has a full race car cage and pinned doors. It has been maintained by Aircooled Racing for the last five years.

Wat dat betreft heeft mijn Betty zelfs meer originele Porsche Onderdelen dan die auto's...
