Bericht Never owned a Porsche Is maintaining it going to break me?
I want to buy a used Porsche Boxter . I can afford to buy the car but my question is will I be able to maintain the car. I'm not a rich guy and I'm not a moron I'd just like to know if brakes, oil changes, hoses, belts things like that are going to break me every few months. I want to drive the car a lot and put lots of miles on it, but if a head lamp costs 600.00 bucks or if a hose blows its 550.00 and a 6mos wait from Germany, that kind of thing. Any help from you Porsche owners out there would be great.

Thank you,
Guy that wants a Porsche

A car is like a woman.

She can make you very happy, she can make you very sad.
She will make you rich (in some cases), but can cost you a (considerable) amount of money in other cases.
From the outside she may look very pretty, but it will take you years before you know her inside-out!

I have had my yellow P for 20 years now and it has made me very happy most of the time! The red one has made me very happy so far, but i do own it only for a couple of years now....

I did buy a Boxster, a 17 year old one, and have it for almost a year now.
The running costs are of course depending on how it was treated in the past, maintenance etc., and how you are going to use it.
The maintenance in the past is to be checked before buying the car, and do yourself a big favor and let the car be check-out by a Porsche-specialist, best BEFORE buying it or otherwise with clear deal about who will pay for the costs to make the car work properly (I did the last one but took a chance with that).
I have driven about 10.000 km this year, and maintenance was about 1000 euro's. Next year I think it will be about that number again, or maybe a few hundred more depending on unexpected extra's. I suspected to need rear tires within a year for example (they were about halfway used-up), but they hardly became any less in the past year.

Of course we are talking about used cars, so there will be parts that will have to be replaced/repaired. Mind that if you are not driving them to their max at all time, Porsches do not brake down easily. But when they do, they can cost you a lot of money because both parts and specialized labour are expensive.

On the other hand; the pure joy the car is giving, is priceless!

I don't think part-supplies will be the issue, but count on it that parts will cost twice to three times as much as for 'ordinary' cars. On the other hand, there are quite some aftermarket alternatives for OEM parts.

Regular maintenance on a Porsche is more expensive than Nissan/Toyota/Citroen, but very comparable to other premium brands such as BMW/Mercedes/Audi. The problem with Porsche owners is that we do not accept our cars ageing. We are always trying to keep these car in an as new/perfect state as possible and that is why it becomes expensive to own a Porsche.

If you plan do drive and use it like you would a regular car and only fix what needs fixing there is no reason for your Porsche to be more expensive than any other premium brand with regards to maintenance. With this I mean that small dings and scratches are not fixed. When it leaks oil, you accept it. When it's dirty you take it to a carwash and don't have it detailed every season/year. Don't buy the Best tyres, but buy ones that will do the job. If your headlamps turn yellow or have chips you accept it and don't have them replaced.

The maintaining of my Porsche is far more expensive than my Audi. When you have a budget of average € 3.000 per year (including tyres) then you have luck when you save some money in the end.

It's a question of time before... We are running after the facts... That's another cook

A Porsche is at least 2 times more expensive in maintenance, if you are lucky. If you are not lucky, that's another cook.

Another typical topic for the porsche forum, the guy asked us a serious question so give him his sin and don't act so over the horse lifted. TS is on this forum searching for knowledge and expertise because you all know from the hood and the rand. I don't think maintenance will break him but this forum is trying hard his best.
